The Chicago Blackhawks host the Dallas Stars at United Center on Sunday, 18 October at 10:00 am AEDT, and the market has spoken: Dallas are clear favourites. The Stars sit 17th on the ladder with three wins and seven points from seven games; the Blackhawks languish 26th, two wins from seven, conceding more than four goals per start. But ladder positions tell only half the story when recent form and venue are factored in.

Both clubs arrive on the back of wins — Chicago edged Winnipeg 4–3 at home on Friday, Dallas took the second leg of their Colorado series 3–2 on the road Thursday night. The Blackhawks have found their feet at United Center, claiming three of their last four on home ice, averaging 3.8 goals for across that four-game sample. The Stars, meanwhile, have conceded just 1.8 goals per game over their last four outings, a defensive foundation that underpins their place in the middle of the Western Conference. The question is whether Dallas's stingy structure holds up against a Blackhawks side that has suddenly rediscovered its scoring touch in front of a home crowd.

Who will win? Home ice and firepower tilt the scales

The head-to-head market prices Chicago at 2.45, Dallas at 1.55. That spread reflects the season records — Dallas sit 11 places higher, boasting a .500 points percentage against the Blackhawks' .286 — but it may undervalue the home side's recent trajectory. Chicago have won three of their last five overall, and crucially three of their last four at United Center. The most recent of those, a one-goal win over Winnipeg on Friday, was their third home victory in nine days. Coming off that result, the Blackhawks carry momentum that the broader season record obscures.

Dallas enter on a win as well, but their form over the last handful of games is more modest in the goals column: 2.5 per start across their last four, all of which came away from home. Their defensive numbers are superior — 1.8 goals against over that same stretch — and their special teams are sharper (87.5 per cent penalty kill versus Chicago's 75). Yet road discipline will be tested by a Blackhawks attack led by Anton Frondell (six assists in seven games) and Teuvo Teräväinen (five points). Chicago's power play sits at just 12.5 per cent, matching Dallas, but at home they have created chances: 3.8 goals per game across their last four at United Center.

Limited recent head-to-head history means we lean on form and venue. Dallas have the better save percentage (.926 versus .861) and a positive Corsi share (50.8 per cent), both of which suggest control of the puck. But the Blackhawks have won their last two at home by a combined three goals, and they average 1.7-goal margins in victory over their last five. The Stars' two wins in their last four came by an average margin of 2.5 goals, but that sample includes a shutout of Buffalo — a result that inflates the figure. Strip that anomaly and the Stars' other victories are tighter affairs.

The value sits with the home side. Chicago at 2.45 offers upside if the United Center surge continues and Dallas's road legs show any fatigue from back-to-back games across two nights. The bold play is to back the Blackhawks to catch a Stars outfit that may not match the home side's desperation or firepower in front of a crowd that has seen three wins in nine days.

Solid leanOur tip: Chicago Blackhawks. Three wins in their last four at United Center, averaging 3.8 goals at home, and the Blackhawks arrive off a Friday night win with momentum the season ladder obscures. Dallas are road-weary from back-to-back games, and the home side's firepower at this venue tilts the scales.

The risks

The case against Chicago is plain: they are 26th for a reason, conceding 4.14 goals per game and posting an .861 save percentage that ranks second-worst in the league. If Dallas control possession as their Corsi suggests and capitalise on the Blackhawks' porous defence, the favourites will justify the price. The Stars' penalty kill is elite at 87.5 per cent, and their goaltending has been markedly better. A disciplined road performance from Dallas, limiting Chicago's chances and converting on the few mistakes the home side will inevitably concede, could see the favourites coast home.

But the market has priced Dallas short given the venue split and the Blackhawks' home scoring surge. Three wins in four at United Center, averaging nearly four goals in those games, is form that cannot be ignored. If Chicago's attack clicks again and Dallas's defence shows even a slight dip after consecutive road games, the value on the home side at 2.45 becomes clear.
